![]() Something magic happens here and the result is the wild harmony of flavours found in our whisky. Age, experience and respect for tradition may define our whisky, but it’s Orkney that sets it apart. We’ve been crafting our award-winning single malt whisky at the Highland Park Distillery in Kirkwall, Orkney, since 1798. The packaging for the whole series was created by Jim Lyngvild, a Danish designer and artist of international renown, whose great grandfather 36 generations ago was Ragnvald Eysteinsson, the first Earl of the Orkney Islands. The word translates to ‘knot of those slain in battle’ and the symbol of inter-linked triangles represents the transition from earthly life to heavenly life – ‘heavenly’ being the operative word when it comes to this special release, winning Double Gold in the 2019 San Francisco Spirits Competition.Ĭreated using a higher proportion of our local peated malt and matured in a combination of sherry seasoned European and American oak casks and ex-bourbon casks, Valknut walks a fine line between the aromatic spiciness of cloves and cracked black pepper and the patisserie sweetness of toasted vanilla and creme brûlée. Unfortunately this bottle has been discontinued but you can probably still pick this up at certain stores if you look hard enough.Valknut is the second in our Viking Legend series, celebrating our rich Nordic ancestry here in Orkney. ![]() Valknut betyder knude af dem, der er slået i kamp, og dens symbol er sammenknyttede trekanter fremgår af adskillige genstande fra vikingetiden. I wish they kept this expression in their core lineup, truly an under appreciated gem of a whisky. The Highland Park Valknut checks off those boxes and is what I look for in a medium peated scotch. Projekt i opakowanie Highland Park VALKNUT powstao we wspópracy z projektantem Jimem Lyngvildem z Danii. The problem I have with the HP12 is that it feels thin at 43% abv and lacks the qualities and maturity of other scotches aged 12 years like for example Bunnahabhain 12. Dominant floral peat smoke, like a smoldering fire, sherry, slightly sweet and woody.įinal Notes: This is everything that I wished the highland park 12 was. The taste is quite rich yet not nearly as sweet as the nose which is a plus for me.įinish: Medium to long finish. Palate: Spicy but not from an alcoholic burn, more like freshly cracked black pepper, which suggests this is from the distillery character and not necessary from young whiskies, sweet peat, oak, butter scotch, light briny note. Nose: Savory sweet medjool dates, dark brown sugar, toffee, light campfire peat, dried orange peel, floral perfume, cedar wood (like an old wooden cabin), some type of spice that I can't quite pick out, slightly briny. No color added, but possibly chill filtered? TBD. I've heard good things about the Valknut/Valkeryie/Valfather series, and this one had some of the qualities that I was looking for at the time in a scotch. ![]() The slightly higher ABV on this one attracted me. ![]() I picked this one up as an online impulse buy, as I have been wanting to try some NAS highland park expressions that weren't in their current core lineup, and wow am I glad that I did. ![]()
